10 Reasons to Schedule an Appointment With Your Primary Care Physician

Ronel Peruel • December 1, 2021

Think of your primary care physician as your bridge that connects you to the healthcare community, ensuring you have the proper resources, care, attention, and advice to live a happy, healthy, and rewarding lifestyle. With preventive care, you can live a long and prosperous life.

As important as your primary care physician is to your long-term health, many people don’t schedule an appointment often enough. Instead of waiting for something to go wrong, a regular visit to your primary care doctor can help detect problem areas before they become a problem.

Of course, that’s just one of the many reasons why you should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. A regular appointment goes a long way in detecting, monitoring, and treating your body in a timely manner. Here are some more reasons to schedule that visit:

You’ll Build a Good Relationship With Your Primary Care Physician

Having a strong support group is essential to living a quality life. With regular visits to your primary care physician, they become an extended member of that support group. They’re dedicated to keeping you healthy, which is why a strong relationship with them is necessary.

Routine Checkups Are Generally Covered By Health Insurance

For those that have health insurance, you’re usually covered for at least one routine checkup with a primary care doctor each year. There’s really no reason not to take advantage of it, especially considering how much you can learn about your health in just one primary care visit.

You’ll Build Accurate & Up-To-Date Medical Records & Medical History

As you get older, having an accurate and up-to-date medical history is extremely important -- even if you don’t have any major health concerns or issues. If something were to go wrong or you were to change doctors for whatever reason, you’ll have a strong paper trail of your health.

Preventive Care Is Essential to Living a Long Life

Your primary care physician is tasked with keeping you healthy and that means putting the patient in a position to succeed from a health standpoint. With preventive care, patients are making the lifestyle choices and habitual changes necessary to lead a quality and healthy life.

You Receive Regular Screenings & Tests

When you visit a primary care practice or clinic, they run a number of different screenings and tests to measure your current health state. These screenings and tests play a major role in preventive care and are essential to receiving quality and professional help in a timely manner.

Early Detection Is Key to Successful Treatment

Primary care physicians often play a major role in detecting certain illnesses, diseases, or problem areas in their early stages. Not only does this result in a more effective treatment plan, but it gives you and your doctor time to determine the best possible solution to the health issue.

Primary Care Physicians Can Direct You to Experienced Specialists

While primary care physicians know a lot about the body, their major focus is on preventive care. In the event they detect an issue or believe you need to be looked at further, they refer you to a specialist that specializes in the area of the body your primary doctor is concerned about.

Primary Care Doctors Help You Make Positive Change In Your Life

Primary care physicians offer an unbiased, outside perspective of how you live your life -- from the decisions you make to the foods you eat, physical activity, social life, and more. If you give them a chance, they can help you make positive and empowering changes in your life.

Reduce Hospital Visits & Lower Medical Costs

One of the major benefits of preventive care with a primary care physician is the reduction in hospital visits and reduced medical bills. When you detect issues early, you get a head start on the recovery process and prevent the health concern from getting any worse than it already is.

Your Body Will Thank You

Our bodies go through a lot on a daily basis. From the everyday stressors that life throws our way to the physical and mental exhaustion we experience far too often, your body can use all the help it can get. A regular visit with your primary care doctor is just what your body needs.

When Should You Schedule an Appointment With a Primary Care Doctor?

As a general rule of thumb, you should schedule a visit with your primary care doctor once per year -- making it an annual checkup. If you’re over the age of 60 years old or you have a chronic condition that needs monitoring, you should schedule a visit twice per year -- or as directed.

Outside of your routine checkup, here are some reasons why you might schedule an appointment with a primary care physician:

  • Chronic disease management (diabetes, heart disease, skin issues, etc.)
  • Referrals for a medical specialist, nutritionist, or other professional
  • Sudden illness or injury that needs to be looked at
  • Respiratory or circulatory concerns (asthma, high blood pressure)
  • Ear or eye infections
  • Depression or anxiety symptoms, changes in mood or mental health
  • Issues with bladder or bowel movements
  • Weight loss or weight management

In the event of an emergency, bypass a visit with your primary care doctor and head straight to the emergency room or hospital. If you need an ambulance, call 9-1-1 immediately and request help at your location. Other than that, don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help if needed.
